Family of 3 dead in murder-suicide
The bodies of Leroy Roger Friedel, Jr., 41, Jennifer Rutherford Friedel, 32, and Leroy Rutherford Friedel, 3, were found at their home on Oak Hill Cemetery Road on Sept. 10.
Preliminary autopsy findings reveal that the family found dead in their Bastrop County home Saturday died by gunshot wounds in an apparent murder-suicide.
Investigators believe Leroy Roger Friedel, Jr., 41, shot his wife Jennifer Rutherford Friedel, 32, multiple times with a pistol during a domestic disturbance outside their home on Oak Hill Cemetery Road. One of those shots entered the house and struck the couple’s 3-year-old son Leroy Rutherford Friedel in the head, officials said.
Investigators believe Leroy Roger Friedel then turned the gun on himself and died by suicide, however his autopsy results are pending further testing on the gun, officials said.
The deaths of Jennifer Friedel and Leroy Rutherford Friedel have been ruled homicides.
The theory of what happened to the Friedels is based on evidence collected at the scene, however the case is still under investigation, Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sissy Jones said.
“Our deepest heartfelt condolences go out to Rutherford and Friedel families during this extremely hard time,” Sergeant Supervisor Arnold Gonzalez said at a press conference Tuesday.
The Bastrop County Sheriff’s office found the three bodies shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday when they were called to the residence on Oak Hill Cemetery Road for a check welfare and possible disturbance call from a friend of the family. All were dead when deputies arrived.
The Friedel home sits on 10 acres behind a locked gate in a remote part of the county and is not visible from public roads. Little had been revealed about the couple Monday. Bastrop County court records show Leroy Roger Friedel, Jr. spent time in jail for burglary in the 1990s.
Gonzalez said the family did not have a history of violence or domestic abuse to his knowledge.
This is the second murder-suicide to shake Bastrop County in less than two months. In July, a Bastrop man, Alejandro Martinez, shot girlfriend Erica Rodriguez, her friend Paula Nino and the couple’s 3-year-old son, Alejandro Rodriguez, before turning the gun on himself.
