"Losing your spouse and your child," said family friend Adrianna Schwab. "I just can't imagine."
The two were killed by neighbor who other neighbors have identified as Joe Frankulin.
Schwab says she heartbroken and sad and can't find the words to explain to her son what happened.
Metro Police said Frankulin showed up at the family's home, shot the mother of three dead in front of her children and took Lex back to his house two doors down, barricaded himself inside, killed the child and then took his own life.
"It's unbelievable, it's tragic, it's gruesome to have a young child murdered," said Lt. Dan McGrath, Metro Police.
Neighbors say Frankulin --  at one time -- had been in a metal band called Goatlord, he lived alone and did yardwork on the block.
"I kind of didn't trust him," said neighbor John Ermilio.
He says Frankulin's behavior became increasingly suspicious and although he didn't have children, he built skateboards and ramps on his property for neighborhood kids.
"I even told my wife that I had some feeling that something is not right about him and he was kind of ...  you know shady and he kind of gave me that eerie feeling," Ermilio said.
Neighbors and friends told 8 News NOW that their concern now is to help a grieving family as they remember a mother and her little boy.
"He was very outgoing, caring, he was just a sweet boy. He loved his siblings, very good boy, good grades, no problems," said Schwab. "She was just a great mother.  Life was all about her and her children and her family. She's the kind of person that would protect her family until her last breath."
Donoso's daughter ran to a neighbor's house for help after her mother was shot. A toddler was also in the home at the time of the shooting and was unharmed.
Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the Donoso family.
